Spooky Spirits (Pumpkin beer - get it? spirits?)

Despite the warm weather today on the E.C. (low 80's) when I stopped at the Scary Market in town to pick up hamburger rolls I was drawn to the speciality beers in the case. They're colorful and shiny - the same reason I'm drawn to jewelry.

But then I realized that being Awk-to-ber (ask Sal) it was the time of year for that famous pumpkin brew. Now I have watched a reality tv show about the Dog Fish brewery. (What? You haven't? How about any of the ones that focus on catching alligators? No? Just me? Sigh......) Anywho, I remembered that the Dogfish pumpkin ale was it's most popular - they literally accounted for every bottle, and it was always hard to get. Imagine my surprise when I saw it at the Scary Market! However, as a cheapskate, I balked at paying over $1 more for four bottles than the6 beers I did purchase. Maybe when I move to DE (home of Dogfish Brewery) I'll get a better price on the beer!

What I did get was Sarnac Pumpkin Ale. It promised to be a full flavored autumn treat. Let me tell you - it is! Of course, I picked up the flavors you'd expect - cinnamon, nutmeg and (and I'm not making this up for the blog) cloves (I really did taste them!). Didn't really get pumpkin per se, just the other spices you associate with it. However, it did have a sweetness as a finishing flavor I couldn't figure out until I read the bottle - vanilla. Exactly!

I'll upload a photo shortly - I highly recommend this beer. The only thing that would have made it better would be to be drinking it around a campfire in the coolness of evening. And by campfire I mean one of those fire pits in my backyard, close to the indoor plumbing and outlets for my hair dryer. I may be the only one posting about beer to this blog, but it is still Jen talking!

Pumpkin Conundrum

Okay, GPs...we have a bit of a conundrum to discuss with you all.

Dave and I came across a great article on recommended beers in the NY Times this week. Full of lots of new and interesting beers to try. So, what's the problem?, you ask.

Well, the first beer on their list is--get this--Jolly Pumpkin. Do we embrace this beer and try it since it's "pumpkin" or do we steer clear since it's "jolly"?

Now you see the source of our dilemma.

Also, just to make our decision even more difficult, the full name of the beer is "Jolly Pumpkin Oro de Calabaza." The Spanish sounding? name is sure to score extra points with many of the GPs.

So, let's hear it from you. None of us should try this beer without some discussion and clear consensus.

Your Sister/Cousin,

Sally
